Whisky Tasting

The beautiful thing about whisky is how subjective and explorative it can be.

Every individual has their own preferred way to enjoy whisky, and while palates differ, the one thing that remains constant is the reverence for the whisky and how experiential appreciating it is. Whether it’s neat in solitude at the cabin, in a cocktail at dinner with friends, or with a few drops of water to release notes in a tasting flight, there’s no wrong way to enjoy our whisky. Tasting whisky is all about the sensory experience, from the aroma to the consistency of the whisky once it hits your lips, to even how it visually looks in a glass, there’s much more than just how the whisky tastes.

Whisky Tasting

Appearance

A whisky’s appearance is your first introduction to a whisky and something that can indicate the type of barrels used for maturation, or even how long the whisky was matured. Hold up your glass up to observe a deep gold colour and viscosity as it coats the inside of the glass.

Aroma

Nosing a whisky before you taste it is essential to the tasting experience, as our sense of smell is responsible for the majority of what we taste. Swirl the whisky in your glass to release aromas as you raise your glass to your nose to reveal rich toffee, ripe fresh fruit and a hint of clove.

On The Palate

As you continue to take in the aromas, it is time to raise the glass to your lips and take your first sip. The first thing you’ll notice is the mouthfeel of the whisky. You’ll notice its consistency and how smooth it washes over your palate. You’ll start to taste those same aromas that you picked up on while nosing the whisky, as flavours begin to be detected. A smooth mouthfeel with a malt-forward backbone is complemented by notes of vanilla, pepper, clove, and charred oak, with a creamy, leathery mouthfeel.

Finish

Once you’ve coated your palate and tasted the whisky, swallow slowly and focus on the flavour that linger, the finish of your tasting experience. Here you’ll notice a short, warming, peppery finish with a trace of coastal sea. A true reflection of Vancouver Island in a glass.
